Asaf Avidan is an Israeli singer-songwriter and musician. His vocals, uniquely high, androgynous and achingly human have drawn comparisons to Janis Joplin, Robert Plant and Jeff Buckley. Avidan has garnered praise from music press such as Rolling Stone through to high-end fashion magazines, such as French Vogue, who run a coveted 2-page feature on Avidan, simply headlined ‘The Voice’.
Despite never releasing a record in the UK, Avidan is able to sell out venues such as London’s Union Chapel where he performed in June this year. A feat perhaps somewhat due to the internet phenonemon of the DJ Wankelmut’s remix of ‘One Day / Reckoning Song’ (2012) which took Avidan’s delicate acoustic lament and dressed it up for the dance-floor. The remix hit number one in fourteen countries and had had over 150 million YouTube views to date.
Avidan’s musical journey started with a girl. Originally a young filmmaker working in Tel Aviv, heartbreak inspired Avidan to pick up a guitar and pour his heartbreak into creating music. His first album proper, ‘The Reckoning’ (2008), released with the band ‘Asaf Avidan & the Mojos’, became Israel’s biggest-selling independent release of all time. With the band’s three subsequent albums being top ten hits throughout Europe after being distributed via Sony-Columbia.
Asaf Avidan & the Mojos have toured the U.S.A, Canada and China, sharing stages with Robert Plant, Ben Harper and Lou Reed. As an acoustic act, Avidan also appeared solo at the world-famous TED conference in 2010, supporting Bob Dylan and playing a tribute concert for The Who at Carnegie Hall.
At the beginning of 2013, Asaf Avidan’s new solo album ‘Different Pulses’ (produced by Tamir Musket) was released in France (where it has reached Platinum status), Germany, Belgium, Italy, Austria & Luxembourg. The worldwide release is to follow late 2013.
The title track ‘Different Pulses’ is being released as a Digital Single in the UK on Monday 28th October via Universal.
This year, Avidan and his new band have embarked on a massive headline tour of Europe, including shows at Olympia, Paris; Les Eurockeennes, Belfort; Parco della Musica, Rome; Rock Werchter, Werchter; Colours of Ostrawa, Ostrawa and the forthcoming one-off headline London show at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on Tuesday 12th November.
